RONO HILLS, Feb 26: Rajiv Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Saket Kushwaha, in his inaugural address to two-day workshop on “Citizen journalism: Empowering youth for social change”, spoke at length about democracy and importance of journalism.
Highlighting in this era of post-truth, the understanding of things becomes quite vague, he said, adding that one’s perspectives and opinion that caters to an event is always a talking point, especially with citizen journalist getting popular.
A inaugural session of two days’ workshop on “Citizen Journalism: Empowering Youth for social change” was conducted today at the Smart classroom of Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University. The workshop is being conducted on 24-25 Feb, 2022 in online mode following all SoPs.
The workshop, orgnised by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) under Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, in collaboration with RGU’s electronics & communication engineering and mass communication department, concluded on Friday.
RGU pro-VC Prof. Amitava Mitra stressed on empowering the youths to make them ready with skills and education for future. The journalism primarily aims at unearthing the truth. But sometimes it is difficult to face the truth though that is the only way to go forward as a society.
With blooming digital media, social media in particular, anyone with a smart phone could click photos, record videos and put up on the internet and tell a story, registrar Dr. N. T. Rikam said and stressed that the moot question which we need to answer is whether it is a good or a bad for the society. Appreciating growth of citizen journalism with news stories which are need to be told, he said such coverage by common man is giving an opportunity to look from a different angle apart from the mainstream media.
The workshop, organized by RGNIYD at the initiative of its director Prof. Sibnath Deb and Prof. Vasanthi Rajendran, was addressed by mass communication HoD Prof. Uttam Kumar Pegu.
The event included day four technical sessions involving citizen journalism expects while anthropology department’s Dr. M. Asgaha conducted a special session on National Youth Policy-2014 and sustainable development followed by address of coordinator-cum-electronics and communication engineering department’s Dr. Maibam Sanju, according to a RGU release.
